"I am tired of the cult of youth. The cultural rejection of old age, the stigmatization of wrinkles, grey hair, of bodies furrowed by the years. I am fascinated by Diana Vreeland, Georgia O’Keeffe and Louise Bourgeois, women who have let time embrace them without ever cheating. Society today condems this, me, I celebrate it. For this session of fine jewellery, I imagined a man and a woman who had been together for a long time, faithful to each other and always incandescent with desire."

A proposed new (non-binary inclusive) trans* symbol.
Not gonna lie, I got a little giddy when I saw it.

I really like it. Aw man.

OH MAN HOW COOL IS THIS

Every time I see this post on my dash, I am just blown away with the levels of meaning it has. Because the asterisk has often been used as an inclusive signifier for the suffix “trans,” and the symbol is obviously referencing that.
But if you look closely, the asterisk attached to the circle contains both the female and male (Venus and Mars) symbols.

And if you know much about the meanings of astrology symbols, you could even argue that there’s a third glyph in there. Because male/Mars is drive (arrow) over spirit (circle), and female/Venus is spirit (circle) over matter (cross). And when you’ve used those, you’re left with what could be interpreted as mind (crescent) over spirit (circle). And I really think it would be quite useful for anyone who doesn’t fit in the gender binary.

So yes. All the awards to the creator!

Taking the first two segments of the GED test today. (Update)

To say I’m a little anxious would be an understatement. Hopefully I can pass the entirety of the test before the end of the year as the test format will change after December. The change would nullify any segments completed this year.

Also, new followers (wow, the number!), there really is no point in following me. I’m grateful, please don’t misunderstand, it’s just that I don’t do much more than like posts and make my own about trivial problems and thoughts.

Sorry to bother y’all who are following me with this. Just anxious as aforementioned.

P.S. Joey, please don’t let our friends know about this if you happen to read this.

Update: I passed the science portion and have to wait 5 days for the result of the writing portion. As soon as I can get my GED, I’ll start reapplying. Between that and my semi-memorized SS#, I should have better luck with job applications.

Again, sorry to bother y’all. I’m now exhausted from nerves; just wanted to update before I take my meds and pass out.

The US House of Representatives applauded the death of Miriam Carey before they knew who she was. They didn’t know about her postpartum depression, or that she talked about “wack men” on Facebook, or that she had been fired from a job last year, or that she lived in Connecticut or that she had been called a great mother. They simply applauded the unpaid work of the DC police in shooting and killing her.

Carey caused a panic last Thursday when she allegedly attempted to ram her vehicle through the White House barricades. Early reports were that a shooter was on the loose, giving everyone paying attention flashbacks to just a few weeks ago and the Navy Yard shooting. But early reports are almost always unreliable, and we eventually learned that Carey was not a shooter, did not have a gun, had her 1-year-old child in the car with her and was shot as she stepped out of the vehicle. This is what our Congress stood up for and clapped.

McDonald’s worker arrested after telling company president she can’t afford shoes.

"A woman who has been employed by the McDonald’s Corporation for over 10 years says she was arrested last week after she confronted the company president at a meeting and told him she couldn’t afford to buy shoes or food for her children.

Nancy Salgado, 26, told The Real News that she felt like she had to speak out during McDonald’s USA President Jeff Stratton’s speech at the Union League Club of Chicago on Friday for the sake of her children.

“It’s really hard for me to feed my two kids and struggle day to day,” she shouted as Stratton was speaking. “Do you think this is fair, that I have to be making $8.25 when I’ve worked for McDonald’s for ten years?”

“I’ve been there for forty years,” Stratton replied from the podium.

“The thing is that I need a raise. But you’re not helping your employees. How is this possible?” Salgado asked.

At that point, someone approached Salgado and informed her that she was going to be arrested.

She later recalled the encounter to The Real News’ Jessica Desvarieux.

“The strength was very powerful, like, just remembering the face of my kids, like I say, you know, just simple things like I can’t provide a pair of shoes like everybody else does, sometimes every month, or anything like that,” she said. “And he needs to know we are what all the employees at McDonald’s are going through. We’re struggling day to day to provide our needs in our houses, things for our kids. And it’s just–it gets harder and harder with just the poverty wage they have us living in.”

“They just told me, you know, well, you’re being under arrest because you just interrupted, you trespassed the property. You’re just going to go to jail,” Salgado added. “And what I remember just telling them, ‘well, like, so, because I have to speak out my mind and I had to tell the president the poverty wage I’m living in, that’s just against the law?’ You know, just be able to speak up your mind and say, you know what, I can’t survive with $8.25? It’s just — it’s ridiculous that I’m going to get arrested. You know.”

Salgado, who is still working at McDonald’s, said she had her hours cut following the arrest and feared further retaliation.

“The CEOs make millions and billions a year and why can’t they provide enough for their employees?” she wondered.”

I think that this is beyond awful for many reasons. People can’t afford to live off of the wages that they are given currently, and can’t even speak out against it. I know tumblr is great for spreading important news like this, so please help me get the word out to support this woman.

Internet, time to do our thing and make this go viral!

"It also feels like, when fans get involved, the actual femaleness of the characters tends to get watered down. Rainbow Dash is remembered for her heroism and recklessness - skipping past how she loved the parasprites at first just as the other ponies did in Swarm of the Century, or how she was excited to join in Rarity’s fashion show in Suited for Success. Pinkie Pie is treated as psychotic or 4th-wall-breaking purely for comedic or horrific purposes, rather than a girl who’s sugary sweet with a bit of nuts. Applejack’s known for being rough and tough, but motherly and caring doesn’t usually come up. The more feminine and down-to-earth sides of the characters often get downplayed if they’re not the primary sides, and they stop feeling so sympathetic as female characters and start being, well, one trick ponies."

Kitty Kate, Roundstables forum: Feminism thread (via skellingtons-isnt-real)

I still think this post says it the best;

"p cool how bronies are terrified of powerful femininity when the entire show is an ode to being a strong female. p cool how bronies turn strong female characters into helpless moe waifus. p cool how they all got sent to the moon:

The last bit is my favorite.

So, Imagine that the company you work for held a poll, and asked everyone if they thought it would be a good idea to put a soda machine in the break room. The poll came back, and the majority of your colleagues said “Yes”, indicating that they would like a soda machine. Some said no, but the majority said yes. So, a week later, there’s a soda machine. Now imagine that Bill in accounting voted against the soda machine. He has a strong hatred for caffeinated soft drinks, thinks they are bad you you, whatever. He campaigns throughout the office to get the machine removed. Well, management decides “OK, we’ll ask again” and again, the majority of people say “Yes, lets keep the soda machine.” Bill continues to campaign, and management continues to ask the employees, and every time, the answer is in favor of the soda machine. This happens, lets say… 35 times. Eventually, Bill says “OK, I’M NOT PROCESSING PAYROLL ANYMORE UNTIL THE SODA MACHINE IS REMOVED”, so nobody will get paid unless management removes the machine. What should we do???

Answer: Fire Bill and get someone who will do the fucking job.

Bonus: Bill tells everyone that he was willing to “Negotiate”, to come to a solution where everyone got their payroll checks, but only so long as that negotiation capitulated to his demand to remove the soda machine.

Bill is a fucking jackass.

"Yesterday, I spent 60 dollars on groceries,
took the bus home,
carried both bags with two good arms back to my studio apartment
and cooked myself dinner.
You and I may have different definitions of a good day.
This week, I paid my rent and my credit card bill,
worked 60 hours between my two jobs,
only saw the sun on my cigarette breaks
and slept like a rock.
Flossed in the morning,
locked my door,
and remembered to buy eggs.
My mother is proud of me.
It is not the kind of pride she brags about at the golf course.
She doesn’t combat topics like, ”My daughter got into Yale”
with, ”Oh yeah, my daughter remembered to buy eggs”
But she is proud.
See, she remembers what came before this.
The weeks where I forgot how to use my muscles,
how I would stay as silent as a thick fog for weeks.
She thought each phone call from an unknown number was the notice of my suicide.
These were the bad days.
My life was a gift that I wanted to return.
My head was a house of leaking faucets and burnt-out lightbulbs.
Depression, is a good lover.
So attentive; has this innate way of making everything about you.
And it is easy to forget that your bedroom is not the world,
That the dark shadows your pain casts is not mood-lighting.
It is easier to stay in this abusive relationship than fix the problems it has created.
Today, I slept in until 10,
cleaned every dish I own,
fought with the bank,
took care of paperwork.
You and I might have different definitions of adulthood.
I don’t work for salary, I didn’t graduate from college,
but I don’t speak for others anymore,
and I don’t regret anything I can’t genuinely apologize for.
And my mother is proud of me.
I burned down a house of depression,
I painted over murals of greyscale,
and it was hard to rewrite my life into one I wanted to live
But today, I want to live.
I didn’t salivate over sharp knives,
or envy the boy who tossed himself off the Brooklyn bridge.
I just cleaned my bathroom,
did the laundry,
called my brother.
Told him, “it was a good day."
